Art Blocks for Ghana 2/3

I've been working on my piece for Art Blocks for Ghana, from The Picture Book Project Foundation.

From their site,
Our mission is to bring continued resources and support to orphaned and underserved children around the world, while extending the talent and good will of the artist community to communities of children in need.
I'm honored to be among the artists they have pulled together for these projects.

Here is the second stage of my contribution.

minismith adoption fund - charity art auction

A little while back I was asked to donate to the Minismith Adoption Fund. Here's one of my Alice original watercolors that I saved out from the show and gave.

You can see the auction here. It's sitting pretty with just a $105 bid so if you like rabbits or my paintings or the idea of folks adopting, get over there and get yourself a deal on an original watercolor and help some good people adopt.

magpie

I don't often blog about other artists or other artist's work (no, I just construct enormous tribute blogs apparently) so when I do I hope you'll know just how much I enjoy that person's work.

I recently had the good fortune to pick up an original Jen Wang painting.

magpie. watercolor. 4" x 6"

I've followed Jen's work for the last few years, I first found her in Flight Volume Two (see a portion of her story on her site > Art > Comics > Destiny Express.)

I just love her drawing, it's beautiful.

Also be sure and check out her shop for more paintings.

unintentional hiatus

I accidentally neglected my blog for a week there, didn't I? It's been a busy last few days. I've spoken at two university art departments, had a show opening (the final one for Alice) and been in drawing overdrive for a really great project besides wrapping up a few other projects. I hope I wasn't missed too terribly much.

To try and make up for it here are some long over due updates to the Portland site, the greatest of which is the updated 2010 animation reel. I hope you'll enjoy.

You can see some brand new animation, the most interesting of which (for me) is the space stuff -- several never-before-blogged sequences. I'm very proud of the space work, especially, though there are quite a few never-before-blogged works in the new reel.

Now back to your regularly scheduled M/W/F posting.

Switzerland!

Here is the Swiss portion of our European adventure.

By this time in the trip we had decided to give people the gritty realism in our film. Behold, many funny faces, Erin falling down, and "What language do you think they speak here?"

Enjoy.

If you like, you can watch this on YouTube in 720p HD!

Because embedding the video here messes with the sidebar. Yes, my blog is held together with interweb tape. I need a new one.

The John Bauer Museum

Last month Erin and I went on a little European adventure. One of the places we visited was Sweden. We went there because in a town called Jönköping lived one of my all time favorite artists, John Bauer.

We added Sweden to our list of places to stop during our two week trek solely for the purpose of visiting his museum. I was not disappointed. I can honestly say that seeing John Bauer's work in person gave me a delirious, giddy feeling I think people call inspiration. I'm not a big believer in inspiration. I believe much more in working very hard, but man, this place was inspiring for me.

And just your luck I took video. Enjoy.

Alice, final showing

One week from today, Friday, November 12 I'll be putting on my final Alice exhibition.

The show will go up at my alma mater for an Alumnus exhibition. I hope to see you there!

Come! If for no other reason, this is your last chance to get some rainbow cake -- Erin has one more in the works. Behold, rainbow cake from the first show, photos from Erin's blog --

charity art - gulf animals

Here is a piece I did a while back for a charity art blog, ripple benefiting animals affected by the BP oil spill. I really can't stand the thought of little creatures in trouble, they can't help themselves.

(For instance, I just spent the evening at the emergency vet with the [formerly stray] cat who recently adopted us. I just really like animals. I always have, what kid doesn't.)

I forgot to post this a couple months back when I first did it. 2010 has been the year of charity auctions for me, I think I've contributed to 4 or 5 this year. I'm very happy to help in someway with work I love to do. And I'm proud to have contributed to ripple which raised over $11,000.

One of the things that has always stuck with me over the years, in fact I find myself remembering it about once a week, is a line from Steven Spielberg's Hook. It's the moment at the end of the film when Peter Pan (Robin Williams) is leaving the Lost Boys and he's choosing who will be the new Pan. Peter chooses, raises his sword and says, "Now I want you to take care of everything that's smaller than you."

"...take care of everything that's smaller than you."

I can't forget that.

My piece for the 8-Bit Calavera

Yet another awesome group show organized by the excellent Chogrin (who you might remember from TYE) over at the Autumn Society, the 8-Bit Calavera is a collection of old NES cartridges, painted.

Below you can find my simple contribution. The goomba's shape seemed to fit well on the cartridge and plus, since I just finished my second volume of "bit and run" comics it was great to revisit the way I like to draw and paint goombas. I like to think that they're just doing their job, minding their own business with a sort of vacant expression like, huh, why does everything want to stomp me?

The show opens this Thursday in Portland, OR.
