bit and run Volume Two, finale

I'll keep this short. We have finally reached the end of bit and run Volume Two. This has been a journey for me, over this year with these two volumes of comics (Volume One and Volume Two) It's been a release, an exercise in color and shapes and humor. I've found what I was looking for with bit and run. I've throughly enjoyed my time with these comics and I'm pleased to think that they might have give you a smile as well. To close the comics I again wanted to do something different to make the ending, the "finale" of sorts, feel special and this time it's with a comic that has a slightly different tone. Like countless others, I love the Zelda series. I love it for many reasons but one that stands out to me is this -- beyond the adventure, beyond the puzzles is the subtle assertion that good will overcome evil. It might be a little silly to feel so serious about a game but that simple idea is central to what makes the story of Zelda work and that's not silly at all. I love it.

I hope this won't be the last time we let our powers combine. Take care,
Cory

strange and distant lands

Above, cold.

So we recently went to the Alps and took this picture. More specifically I mean, we went on a little European adventure for two weeks and just returned home last night. London, Switzerland, Sweden, and Paris.

Over the next few days I'll post about our excursion into these strange and distant lands. And I went to the John Bauer museum in Sweden. It was the best.

I also got to see this cat that was real pretty.

bit and run, giveaway

Earlier this year I partnered with GoNintendo to release my Nintendo themed "bit and run" comics. We've had two "series" worth of comics, Volume One and Volume Two. And now the second set of comics is drawing to a close. I wanted to do something special to mark the occasion, that's why over on GoNintendo I've taken this week's comic to make a giveaway. Three original drawings.

A Shy Guy talking onions, a Goomba in a Tanuki suit, and a Shy Guy playing a GameBoy.

These giveaways are a small thank you to Kevin Cassidy, one of the finest dudes on the internet and the man behind GoNintendo. Kevin gave me huge audience and platform to distribute these comics and I wanted to give back to the community he's created in some small way. These matted 5x7s are up for grabs by a simple comment on the post over at GoNintendo. Should you choose to enter over there, good luck!

Thank you all for a great run of comics.

Next week, "bit and run" Volume Two, finale.

more Alice spots

Here's a couple more of the supplemental drawings I made for the Alice show. I used these in the book as well as informational pieces hanging next to the main pieces at the show.

Here's some more of my favorite ones. All these are pictures taken from my Alice - drawings, sketches and excerpts book, hence the text in some.

I love the Cheshire cat one, I felt so dang clever when I realized that if I didn't complete the drawing and just let the underdrawing show through it would be like he was slowly vanishing. Yeah!

Alice, process

Here is one of the small information pieces I put up on the wall at my recent "Alice" show.

I wanted to help people understand the process behind creating the pieces.

I can't bear to think some people might be under the impression that work that has gone through a digital stage at some point somehow makes less of a compelling image.

One of the big reasons behind the show was give folks a glimpse into my typical working method, how I work professionally and that there's so much more going on in what you might term "illustration" than what I think most people are accustomed to. It's the most vibrant, living art field I can imagine -- from comics to graphic novels to game development, film, animation, books -- you name it. More is happening, more real work being created in these fields than anywhere else I see.

Fraggle, character studies/gifts

Whenever I have a project I've particularly enjoyed I like to send a gift to the client, usually some piece of the job, be it a early drawing or a whole new piece. Just something to commemorate the occasion. I love the work I get to do and good clients are awesome and need to be taken care of.

A few months ago I got a dream job. I got to do some work for the Jim Henson Co. I was asked to illustrate a 6 page story in the upcoming volume of the new Fraggle Rock comics.

Needless to say the experience was awesome and I can honestly say that I enjoyed every moment of working on it. I cannot wait to show it to you guys.

But,

until then (I'm not sure when it comes out) we'll have to make do with the gifts I sent to Tim Beedle, the editor and Joe LeFavi, the writer.

(I added the "Cory Godbey" down there for these jpgs.
Yes, I signed them for real before I sent them.)

Tim and Joe got the original character drawings for Gobo and Boober, these were part of the sample character art I had to turn in to be approved by Henson in the first place. I wish I had snapped pictures of these in the mats because they looked pretty good. But I'm stupid and forgot to do that before I mailed them out.

So, until next time, stay Fraggle.

I mean, dance your cares away.

Alice, original pieces + show photos

Because I usually can't help but make more work for myself, I decided the week before the show opened that I wanted to do a bunch of new, original Alice inspired drawings and watercolors.

I spent a furious couple days before the show painting into the very late/early hours.

Here is what resulted.

* Note, the scans of the paintings (the second picture of the two) are the truer representation of the colors. The lights of the gallery and the glare of the big windows on the glass washed out the pictures somewhat.

In addition to these, I've added to my shop every one of the large framed 20" x 24" Giclée prints that make up the main 12 pieces of my show. If you like, you can see those here. Free shipping on those!

Last but not least, my wife Erin put together a huge gallery of pictures from the show. Be sure and look for the elusive rainbow cake. Enjoy.
